Making high quality maps for outdoor hobbies has become amazingly easy. My first forays in 2010 took a lot of effort. My latest one only took a few days to collect and format the information. Just a matter of knowing where to find the base data and a bit of artistry for the representation.
Early hobby maps:
I just finished making a hobby map for an activity at Spruce Hill Resort. I'll reveal that one after 17 May 2019, but here are other recent hobby maps and you can see the difference.
Gathering the base map information was hard before and sometimes I had to use Gnu Image Manipulation Program to trace buildings, overlay the grid and manually label each grid line. Gathering base map information is easy now, with many sources for geographic information and Quantum Geographic Information System to pull it all together.
