Civil engineer during final stage re-design and implementation. Project involved noise abatement design, structural engineering on the fences, and civil site improvements assembling these parts for construction.
Key lesson: construction cost estimators are valuable on a team
During contract development, Mahesh Motwani worked with me to develop the opinion of probable cost. Mahesh developed costs for the construction packages for the court markings and the net system during a shared-screen session.
The cost databases that a cost estimator has access to make the crude collection of past costs in my previous practice irrelevant.
Noise abatement for pickleball
Project involved installing noise abatement measures on a pickleball court and extending the court to accommodate a reconfigured set of pickleball and tennis courts, as well as installing appropriate permanent nets. The noise reduction panels need to enclose the primary pickleball area so that the noise would stay below the threshold in the standards Delta committed to meeting.
The nuances of meeting the needs of the community triggered a need for two revisions of the designed layout. Corporation of Delta works with the local neighbourhood and the sports associations so that park assets serve everyone.
Delta had already converted part of the courts from tennis to pickleball.
At start, Delta needed the majority of the courts converted to primarily pickleball and retain only one tennis court. As the design materialized, the requirements adapted so that all new pairs of pickle ball court included alternative markings for tennis. The final layout emerged after one last refinement.
Structural design covered new fence that could carry the noise abatement panels and retrofits for the existing fence for carrying the panels.
What made it special
Working with a client who really knows what they want and adjusts delivery method to fit inside procurement and weather constraints.
The Delta Parks department has active contracts with court-marking companies and deep knowledge about the net systems. When Parks started implementing the project, the delivery method needed to meet budget and timing constraints.
To get the civil works done in the late autumn, Parks required us to split the pavement marking changes to a separate opinion of probable cost. Parks could easily tackle the pavement marking changes with their court marking company when weather improved.
