Joined this project when I started at Stantec. Its formal name is quite long: "Burnaby-North-Shore Road and Rail Improvements (Douglas Road Grade Separation / Holdom Overpass." We developed the Reference Concept Design for the planned Design-Build project.

Key Lesson: important engineering reports deserve a technical editor

Alongside the fully remote teamwork between WSP and Stantec, the key lesson I found involved our final report. I started at 90% and the report included passages that were extremely hard to decipher.

Engineering teams need someone to edit and clean up important reports so that the people using the report understand what you mean.

Alongside this key lesson, technologists who slavishly follow TAC principles had a hard time understanding the urban context. A lot of coaching from transportation engineering helped.

Project Highlights

Burnaby, BC, Canada -WSP and Stantec worked under Vancouver Fraser Port Authority with Mott MacDonald on as owner's technical advisor.

Road Engineering Lead responsible for street configuration and design at the functional engineering level. As sub-consultant, Stantec supported the prime consultant as Owner's Engineer to prepare functional design and specifications to eliminate an existing at-grade rail crossing and replace it with an overpass. Jessé provides the street and municipal engineering knowledge needed for the multi-disciplined design team to take the selected preliminary design and advance it to a functional design for a design-build contractor to implement.
